Whispering Swamp

Whispering Swamp

The Шепчущее болото is a power level 2 region in Ashenfall that serves as a natural buffer between the human territories of Brynmoor and the garou domain of Ghornfell. Named for the eerie whispers that bubble up from its fetid waters, the swamp holds memories of past conflicts in its murky depths.

Description

The region is said to be haunted, and thick fog hangs over it, limiting visibility. Those who wander it at night speak of whispers bubbling up from the fetid water, and of a coldness that reaches beneath warm clothing into bone and blood. Ancient trees of spiteful nature wrap their roots around the bones of adventurers, villagers, and warriors alike, indifferent to goblin, human, or garou. journals tell of tiny stones that occasionally bubble to the surface, black as midnight and cold to the touch and an ancient horror walks the region.

Despite the dangers, the swamp is rich with resources for crafting. Globs of swamp tar collect in places, clay deposits are scattered throughout, and herbs such as harralander and marrentil grow. Swamp weed gathered here can be processed into textile, and bittercap mushrooms grow sparsely across the region, with greater abundance found within the Druid's Cave and western cave. The murky water hinders movement, and putrid rats infest the shallows. Goblin hunters keep sentries on ruins throughout the region. The region only contains one lore scrap - the torn journal page The region also houses a memorial candle for the Mirror, Mirror quest this item can be found in the eastern basin.

History

When war broke out between humans and garou, the swamps formed a natural boundary between the two factions. The muddy water was difficult to fight in, and neither side enjoyed the idea of drowning on the battlefield. Now, the swamp retains the memories of that conflict in its murky depths.

The necromancer Abraxus wandered the Whispering Swamps in his youth, drawn by the swamp's reputation as ancient and haunted and by a magic unlike any other part of Ashenfall. He sought forbidden secrets others dared not pursue, exploring its vaults and caves and battling goblins in the mists, yet never found the power he sought there.

In the Sixth Age

Prior to the events of Dragon Slayer, the explorer Cathan sought a "blue-flamed door" within the swamp with the help of the goblin Spitfoot, believing it held the secret to General Velgar's destruction.

When war broke out between humans and garou, it was the swamps that formed a buffer between the two factions. The muddy water was difficult to fight in and neither side enjoyed the idea of drowning on the battlefield. Now, the swamp retains the memories of that conflict, swallowing down the remnants of that battle into its murky depths. Yet, among all the ruin and the decay, the swamp is rife with ingredients for crafting. Herbs grow between the weeds and the caves that run along the swamp's edges are filled with ore. Still, one must be ever careful. Goblins roam these regions, hunters keeping an eye out for northern invaders. The garou watch from Ghornfell, ready for any foolish trespasser that might enter their domain. And in the darkness of night, an ancient horror walks the region, offering only death's embrace to any it finds.

Trivia

  • The tiny black stones described in the whispering cape journal, extremely cold to the touch and driving handlers to murderous madness with whispering share properties with black stone. This coincides with the whispering that gives the swamp its namesake.
