Fallen Hoplite's Aspis

The fallen hoplite's aspis is a power level 5 shield that can be crafted at a blacksmith's bench after obtaining a sundering spiked slab as a rare drop (5/100) from a skeletal hoplite. It can be ascended at the mystic forge using ascension cores.

Its special effect is that it has 3 higher block value at every power level compared to most other shields. Block value directly reduces damage taken from attacks linearly, i.e. if you have more block value than an attack deals, you will lose no health, your armour will be unaffected, and the stamina cost to block an attack will be low, lower than dodging that same attack.

This has to be compared with the effects provided by the other shields though, for example this shield will be unable to block dragon fire like the anti-dragon shield, dragonblight shield, and dragoncurse shield (but not the dragonfire shield). This shield also does not an offensive benefit like those shield's parry effects or the toktz-ket-xil's bonus melee crit damage, although that shield in particular has 6 less block than other shields.

The hoplites of Emberwood named themselves after Saradomin’s forces in the holy scripture. The legendary hoplites were warriors on the world of Hallow, who were trained from farmers and artisans, rather than military families or nobility, and the Emberwood hoplites came from similar stock.

They were best known for their fighting style using spears and shields, with the shield being the defining feature. These shields were designed to be worn for longer periods of time, resting against the shoulder for more comfortable carrying.

The hoplites may have been raised from peasant stock, but their camaraderie made them a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

As the withering took them, the hoplites retained the rote memory of their training and remained a deadly threat to all who faced them.
