Before the master wand, there was a staff of such power that the mages of the wizard’s tower decided it was too dangerous to keep. They placed the staff in teleportation circle, scrambled the coordinates and hurled it through the Abyss to settle far away from Misthalin.

In truth, it should have ended in the depths of the sea, sinking down and down into the darkness, but something caught it instead.

A powerful elven mage had found their way to Ashenfall, and they had already indulged in powers darker than what their kin traditionally allowed. They felt the staff hurtling through the Abyss and used their unnatural sorcery to pull it to them, so that they might benefit from its power.

This elf and his retinue found their way to the Umbral Sands, where they challenged one of the Moon Garou’s mages to a magical duel, over some perceived slight or other. The battle was magnificent, power that shook the dunes and cast a great sandstorm into the skies. The garou was defeated, but not before her spells shattered the master’s staff.

In his arrogance he cast the remains aside and continued his journey into Ashenfall. Moon Garou would find the remnants of the staff and found a way to recreate it. Weaker than the original, true, but still possessing a power that would make lesser mages tremble.
