This journal is the property of Tazyn – age 9. DO NOT READ IT MUM!
I don’t know where mum is. I looked and I looked, but I couldn’t find her. I wandered only a little bit, just wanted to follow a pretty beetle I found, and now I don’t know where I am, or she is.
It’s scary out here. The wind keeps howling and there are things in the sand that wriggle and chase me. The vultures circle overheard as if waiting for me to fall.
Where’s mum? Why can’t she find me?
It got dark, then light again, and still no sign of mum. I slept under a big rock, it was cold and insects crawled all over me. I got spiders in my fur, I just know it.
I don’t know where I am. My mouth is so dry. I still can’t find mum. I’m so tired. Maybe if I sleep, all of this will go away and I’ll just wake up in my bed.
There was a voice, singing. Not like mum’s singing, this one was in tune. I followed it to a great river that wasn’t there yesterday and there was this woman just singing on a rock. She was the prettiest garou I ever saw. Eyes that sparkled like stars and silver fur like the moon. She wore this headdress that seemed to turn into water that dripped down into the river below.
She bade me drink, and it was delicious! Like fish soup and cactus juice, all rolled into one. I sat with her and she sang to me, banishing the shadows with her music. I fell asleep on her knees as she stroked my hair and promised I’d soon be home.
When I woke up, mum was fussing at me, brushing the sand from my fur. There was no river, nor silvery lady, but I was safe and found and could finally go home.
Thank you, weird singing moon lady! You’re the best.
